Stageing research outcomes as theatre plays

Challenge: How society should respond to an increasingly ageing population

The art of ageing was an artistic research project funded by the EU. The project conducted research in to the issues of ageing and what it means politically and socially for Europe to transition to societies with an increasing elderly population. The research consisted of interviews with elderly persons across Europe and demographic research and the outcomes of the research process was staged as a series of theatre plays in different European countries, embodying the issues discovered in the research process.

As an example, the play “The Clock is Ticking”, staged in Germany and Romania, explored the political consequences of an ageing population. In Germany, an ageing demographic control the majority of the votes while in Romania, a large demographic of youths are going to vote for the first time and have major impacts on the democratic process. The playwright Peca Stefan has done extensive interview research in both countries and the play reflect the outcomes of this research process.

The project also hosted a conference and festival combining research and artistic expressions.
