Art and culture are often the result of planning and urban development, but are rarely part of the planning and development process itself. Sound and music in particular are underestimated as tools in urban development. For this reason, Researcher and sound artist Steve Williams has collaborated with the cultural administration of the City of Gothenburg to organize a series of workshops where residents are invited to participate and create the soundscape of the future.
These workshops are also an opportunity to reflect on the role of sound in the city’s development using backcasting methodology. Through this process, the project integrates sound and music into the planning of areas as part of a more sustainable urban development. The project has also resulted in a live performance of a sound art composition featuring archival sounds from the Lindholmen shipyards, field recordings of the present-day neighbourhood, and the co-created soundscapes of the future.
